Welcome to the Prairies

My graduation project

Grad project: Welcome

Welcome to the Prairies,

2022

Watercolour

22X30”

Over the past couple years, I have focused a lot of my work on my family history rooted in the Canadian Prairies. It is a special place to me. It is where I spend my summers and where I feel most like myself. My Baba (grandmother) grew up on a farm in Alberta in the 1930s and her father worked a grain elevator. In 2020, she brought me and my mom on a road trip to Western Manitoba to visit some of the few remaining buildings that were once functioning elevators. It was an opportunity for her to relive a part of her childhood and share it with me. With this painting, I wanted to capture the beauty, simplicity, and imperfection of this structure in black and white. To me, it encapsulates my memory of the tall, proud, majestic grain elevator that taught me part of who I am.
